Summer Residence Program 2009

We have just learned (early May 2009) that we did not receive the grant funding that we had hoped would pay for housing and a summer stipend. We hope to still be able to pay for housing, two teachers to a room, and we will let you know more later. A stipend is problematic at this point, but perhaps a small one.

Each summer we offer an intensive 3-4 week workshop, in-residence at UVa, for teachers who want to be or already are high school physics teachers. There are additional course requirements at home afterward. The courses are required for those desiring our Master of Arts in Physics Education (MAPE) degree, but you do not have to be a MAPE candidate to take the courses. Different courses are offered in even and odd years (see the table below).

Physics 631(Lecture) and 635(Lab) will be offered this summer 2009. They are appropriate for teachers who want to be or already are high school physics teachers. A prior college level calculus course is required (contact us if you do not have a calculus background). The course dates this summer are July 6 - July 29, 2009. If you want to take both courses as most teachers do, you must apply ( for funding) and register( pay tuition). To be considered for a stipend and/or housing allowance, you must fill out the online Summer 631/635 application (or print out and mail it to the address shown on the application). In addition, you must also register (and pay course tuition) for the courses through the UVa School of Continuing and Professional Studies. For more information about the courses, please click on Physics 631 and Physics 635.

If you desire to take only one of the courses, please state your reasons on the application or send a separate email to PhysicsEducation@virginia.edu.

We will consider those applications received by June 5, 2009 for funding. After June 5 we will consider your application, but may or may not offer funding.

Housing

Housing will be provided from July 5 to July 29 (11:00 AM check-out time) in the Faulkner Apartments within a walking distance of 15-20 minutes from the Physics Building. There is some advantage to being with other participants in the apartments for peer help. We will also have teaching assistants help in the apartments at night. Faulkner Apartments are air-conditioned suites with 2 bedrooms, kitchen area, living room area, and one and half baths and access to free wireless. You will be provided with economy service and more details on this can be found later. If you wish to cook in the kitchen, you have to bring your own cooking pots and pans and utensils. Each bedroom (for two persons) is furnished with two twin extra-long beds including matress, two wardrobes, and two desks. You will have to bring your own pillow and sheets and blankets. Laundry facilities and vending machines are available nearby. The university is removing computer labs, because most students now have a laptop. There will be no computer lab in the housing area. There will be a lounge area with wireless reserved for our group, but you will need an access code. We strongly encourage everyone to bring a laptop computer since you will have free access to wireless almost everywhere on campus. We can provide access to computers in the physics building at night. You will be provided with a computer ID from physics to get access to the wireless. to make the connection to your computer. You can also share computers to do the homework, if necessary. School System Support

We hope that most participants will be able to obtain some tuition support from your local school system. We do expect your school system to provide travel funds for you (if you live in Virginia) to attend the Virginia Instructor of Physics Demonstration session at the annual Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) conference held in Virginia each Fall.
