Summer Residence Program
Each summer we offer an intensive 3-4 week workshop, in-residence at UVa, for teachers who want to be or already are high school physics teachers. There are additional course requirements at home afterward. The courses are required for those desiring our Master of Arts in Physics Education (MAPE) degree, but you do not have to be a MAPE candidate to take the courses. Different courses are offered in even and odd years (see the table below).
Physics 632(Lecture) and 636(Lab) will be offered this summer 2008. They are appropriate for teachers who want to be or already are high school physics teachers. A prior college level calculus course is recommended. The course dates this summer are July 7 - July 30, 2008. If you want to take both courses as most teachers do, you must apply ( for funding) and register( pay tuition). To be considered for a stipend and/or housing allowance, you must fill out the online Summer 632/636 application (or print out and mail it to the address shown on the application). In addition, you must also register (and pay course tuition) for the courses through the UVa School of Continuing and Professional Studies. For more information about the courses, please click on Physics 632 and Physics 636.
If you desire to take only one of the courses, please state your reasons on the application or send a separate email to PhysicsEducation@virginia.edu.We have applied for NCLB funding to support you during the summer. We expect to receive word about the grant around April 28, 2008 whether we will have funds to support summer dorm housing and a daily stipend. If we do noat get full NCLB funding, we probably will have still have some support for you, but it will not be as much. We will consider those applications received by June 2, 2008 for funding. After June 2 we will consider your application, but may or may not offer funding.
Housing
Housing will be provided for you within a walking distance of 10 -15 minutes from the Physics Building. There is some advantage to being with other participants in the dorm housing for peer help. We have teaching assistant help in the dorms at night. Funds for housing will come from the NCLB grant or possibly other sources. Our expectation is that those teachers living close to Charlottesville will commute. We hope to provide the commuters with a parking pass and some travel expense. More on this later. Teachers will say in the Lambeth Residence Area. These are air-conditioned suites, which are conveniently located near the Barracks Road shopping center, the Corner, and the Lawn. Lambeth combines the features of On-Grounds accommodations with easy access to the offerings of the city of Charlottesville. Popular with many different age groups, Lambeth offers two and three bedroom air-conditioned apartments. The apartments contain a kitchen, a living/dining area, and either one and a half or two bathrooms. Each bedroom is furnished with two twin extra-long beds (only one person will occupy a bedroom) , two wardrobes, and two desks (only one person will occupy each bedroom). Laundry facilities, a computer lab, and vending machines are all available in centrally located Lambeth Commons. For more details, please click on housing and check-in procedures, but do not do this until June 1. For a description and layout of the suites, please click on Lambeth Residence Area.

School System Support
We hope that most participants will be able to obtain some tuition support from your local school system. We do expect your school system to provide travel funds for you (if you live in Virginia) to attend the Virginia Instructor of Physics Demonstration session at the annual Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) conference held in Virginia each Fall.| Summer Year |
